Mrs. Olsen was in fact only in the book "On the Banks of Plum Creek"

From what I read about the TV series she was only suppose to be in the first season. But the writers and audience a like couldn't do without snippty Mrs.Olsen and the underdog, Mr.Olsen. So they stayed in.

In the book you could tell Mrs. Olson was.. well, not very pleasant. But there was never a rivalry between her and Caroline Ingalls. She was literally only in a chapter or two. and then you only really heard about Nellie Olsen in the other books. ( Even though the three times you read about Nellie, they're not the same person. it seems she just wanted to have a constant antagonist). In the book when you encounter Nellie again you find out that Nels lost the business and lived just like a farmer in a claim shanty. Making Nellie Olsen a "country girl"

Mr. Olsen was pretty much the same as in the book but he was only encountered twice I think. He was very nice and a little mousy.

I hope that covers your questions for you. :)

Actually, she was a lot nicer in the books then she was in the TV series, but she was a bit stuck up. I still remember the party scene in my head from the books.

In reality though, The Olesons were actually The Nelson's and they were both very mean people but Laura didn't want to write that badly about someone so she sweetened them both up. :)
