sped up sounds?

I was watching this morning's episode where the family helped save the firehouse nightclub. The end of the show featured the family doing one of their numbers, but something was wrong with the speed....the singing and music sped up and slowed down once in a while during the number. I know Hallmark speeds up shows ("I Love Lucy" is obviously sped up when compared to the dvds)...Does anyone else notice this with the Partridges.....? It was so obvious during the song that it made them sound like they weren't on key!

I thought was hearing things at first but that's what they are doing it, no doubt about it. In the episodes I've watched, they go back and forth on the speed of the songs which is almost amusing if it weren't so annoying. I'm guessing that from an editing point of view, the songs are difficult to chop so that must have been someone's brilliant solution to keep the song intact. How much time does that save? I would guess seconds and even though I know seconds add up, I wish there was another way.
